Radiator Repairs & Cooling System Service Perth
Expert radiator and cooling system care for Perth drivers
An overheating engine is one of the fastest ways to turn a routine drive into a costly breakdown. Your vehicleâs cooling system works hard to keep the engine at the correct operating temperature, circulating coolant through the radiator, water pump, thermostat and hoses to draw heat away from the engine block.
If something in that system gives out, your engine can overheat quickly, and thatâs when you start looking at serious damage like a blown head gasket or warped cylinder head.
We do all our radiator and cooling system work right here at our Midvale workshop.
Coolant flush, leaking hose, thermostat, full radiator swap. Our team has the gear and the know-how to track down the problem and fix it properly the first time. Coolant flushes are also available as a standalone service, and are always included when we replace a radiator to make sure the whole system is clean.
Perthâs extreme summer heat puts additional strain on cooling systems, especially during stop-start traffic, towing, or extended drives through the eastern suburbs and beyond. If your temperature gauge is climbing higher than usual, your coolant level keeps dropping, or you have spotted a puddle of coolant under the car, do not wait.
Bring it in and let us take a look before a small leak becomes a big repair.

Signs your radiator or cooling system needs attention
Cooling system problems can develop gradually or strike without warning. Here are the warning signs our technicians recommend watching for so you can catch issues early and avoid expensive engine damage.
Engine temperature gauge rising higher than normal
If the temperature needle climbs above the normal range during everyday driving, your cooling system is not doing its job. This could point to a failing thermostat, low coolant, a blocked radiator, a faulty water pump, or a damaged cooling fan. Do not ignore it; pull over safely and let the engine cool before driving to our workshop.
Coolant leaks or puddles under the car
Coolant is typically green, red, blue or orange depending on the type. If you see coloured fluid under your car after it has been parked, there is likely a leak from a radiator hose, the radiator core, the water pump or a corroded fitting. Even a small drip can lead to the system running low, causing the engine to overheat.
Low coolant level or frequent top-ups
If you are regularly topping up the coolant reservoir, there is almost certainly a leak somewhere in the system. Sometimes the leak is external and visible; other times coolant can escape internally through a failing head gasket, which is a more serious and costly issue to address.
Discoloured or murky coolant
Fresh coolant is brightly coloured and clear. If yours looks rusty, muddy or contains visible sediment, the coolant may be old and losing its corrosion-inhibiting properties. A coolant flush removes the old fluid and contaminants, replacing it with fresh coolant to protect the radiator and engine from internal corrosion and scale build-up.
Expansion tank full but radiator level low
This often indicates a problem with the radiator cap or a blockage preventing coolant from circulating properly between the radiator and the overflow bottle. A cooling system pressure test will help identify where the issue lies.
Interior heater not blowing hot air
Your cabin heater relies on hot coolant flowing through a small heater core behind the dashboard. If the heater is blowing cold or lukewarm air, it can indicate low coolant, a blocked heater core, a stuck thermostat, or air trapped in the system.
Engine cooling fan running constantly
If the electric cooling fan or thermo fan seems to run non-stop, even at highway speeds, the engine may be running hotter than it should. This can be caused by a faulty coolant temperature sensor, a stuck thermostat or a cooling system that is not circulating efficiently.
Sweet smell from the engine bay
Coolant has a distinctive sweet smell. If you notice it when you park the car or open the bonnet, it is worth investigating. Even a small external leak can produce this odour and will eventually lead to low coolant levels if left unchecked.
If you have noticed any of these signs, bring your vehicle in for a cooling system inspection. We will pressure test the system, identify the cause and give you a clear, upfront quote before we start any work.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a radiator do?
The radiator is a heat exchanger that transfers heat from the engineâs coolant to the outside air. As coolant circulates through the engine block and cylinder head, it absorbs heat. That hot coolant then flows through the radiator core, where air passing over the fins cools it down before it circulates back through the engine. Without a functioning radiator, the engine would overheat very quickly.
How often should I get a coolant flush?
Most vehicle manufacturers recommend a coolant flush every two to five years, or at specified kilometre intervals in your logbook. The exact timing depends on the type of coolant your vehicle uses. Long-life coolants can last longer, while older-style coolants may need changing more frequently. We check your coolant condition during every service and will let you know when it is due.
Can I get a coolant flush without other repairs?
Yes. We offer coolant flushes as a standalone service. Itâs a great way to maintain your cooling system between major services. We also include a full coolant flush whenever we replace a radiator to make sure the whole system is clean and free of contaminants.
How do I know if my radiator needs replacing or just repairing?
If itâs a small leak at a hose connection or a minor crack, we can often repair it without replacing the whole unit. But if the core is corroded through, leaking in several spots, or clogged up with sediment inside, youâre generally better off with a new radiator. Itâll last longer and save you money compared to patching one thatâs on its way out. We will always explain both options and help you make the best decision for your situation.
Can I just top up coolant with water?
In an emergency, adding clean water to get you safely to a workshop is acceptable. However, running on straight water long-term is not recommended. Water does not contain the corrosion inhibitors that protect your radiator, water pump and engine block from internal rust and scale. It also boils at a lower temperature than a proper coolant mix, reducing the systemâs ability to manage extreme heat. We use the correct specification coolant for your vehicle every time.
Why is my car overheating in traffic but fine on the highway?
At highway speeds, air flows naturally through the radiator to cool the engine. In slow or stationary traffic, the electric cooling fan (or thermo fan) takes over that job. If the fan is not working properly, or if the thermostat is stuck, the engine temperature will climb quickly in stop-start conditions. A faulty coolant temperature sensor or low coolant can also contribute. We will diagnose the exact cause and fix it.
What coolant type does my car need?
Different vehicles require different coolant formulations. Common types include OAT (Organic Acid Technology), IAT (Inorganic Acid Technology) and hybrid formulations. Using the wrong type can reduce corrosion protection and may damage seals. We always match the coolant to your manufacturerâs specifications, so you do not need to worry about getting it wrong.
How long does a radiator replacement take?
A straightforward radiator replacement typically takes two to four hours, depending on the vehicle and how accessible the radiator is. Some vehicles, particularly those with tightly packaged engine bays, may take a little longer. We will give you a time estimate when you book in so you can plan your day.
Do you work on all makes and models?
Yes. We service and repair cooling systems on all makes and models, including European vehicles (BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volkswagen), Japanese, Korean and Australian makes. Whether it is a family sedan, SUV, ute, 4WD or light commercial vehicle, we have the experience and parts access to get it sorted.
Can I pay later?
Yes. Along with EFTPOS and cash, we accept Afterpay and Openpay, so you can spread the cost into manageable payments that suit your budget.
What should I do if my car overheats while driving?
Pull over safely as soon as it is safe to do so and turn off the engine. Do not open the radiator cap while the engine is hot, as the system is under pressure and you could be scalded. Let the engine cool for at least 20 to 30 minutes. If you have water, you can carefully top up the coolant reservoir once the system has cooled. Then drive gently to our workshop or call us on 08 9274 7311 and we will help you work out the safest next step. If the temperature climbs again, stop immediately and arrange a tow to avoid engine damage.
How much do radiator repairs cost?
The cost depends on the make and model of your vehicle, the extent of the issue, and whether parts need to be replaced. Contact us for a fast, no-obligation estimate tailored to your vehicle.
